CHANSE Programme
CHANSE (Collaboration of Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe) is a joint initiative of 27 research funding organisations from 24 countries.
The CHANSE programme was established through the merger of two former ERA-nets focused on supporting the social sciences and humanities: HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) and NORFACE (New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Cooperation in Europe), which contributed to strengthening European scientific cooperation, building research capacity and coordinating strategic investment in these disciplines.
The CHANSE initiative was tasked with establishing thematic links between the social sciences and the humanities and regularly issuing interdisciplinary calls for proposals on selected topics. Project proposals were submitted by a consortium comprising at least three research teams. Each partner submitted a project proposal to its funding body and, at the same time, the principal investigator (PI) submitted it to the CHANSE coordinators. Funding for the project was provided by the individual partner organisations, which covered the costs associated with implementing their respective national components of the project. The conditions for submitting project proposals were governed both by the transnational CHANSE rules and by the national rules of the individual partners.
The CHANSE initiative ended on 31 August 2026; no further calls for proposals will be issued. The final funded projects under the last call on the theme of CRISIS are currently coming to an end. The Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) supported one winning project, TICTOC (Times of Crisis, Times in Crisis: The Temporalities of Europe in Polycrisis), involving a Czech team from the Institute of Ethnology, CAS, which is due to be completed by the end of 2027.
