Institute of the Czech Language of the CAS

Markéta Pravdová completed her studies at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague in 1999 in the field of Czech language and literature – philosophy. Already during her studies, she worked in the Department of Language Cultivation and in the language advice bureau of the Institute of the Czech Language of the CAS. She began her professional career as a media analyst and subsequently an account manager in a leading Czech agency specializing in public relations - Donath-Burson-Marsteller. In 2000, she completed the London School of Public Relations. In 2001, she returned to the Institute of the Czech Language of the CAS and in 2005 defended her doctoral dissertation work at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University in the field of media studies. In 2015, she completed the MBA study programme in Public Relations and Communications at the Business Institute.

In her research work, Markéta Pravdová deals with the contemporary Czech language and its popularisation. Her professional focus includes the theory and practice of language cultivation, including language consultancy. From 2005-2016 she served as the head of the Department of Language Cultivation at the Institute of the Czech Language of the CAS and since 2011 she has been its Deputy Director. She is a member of the Council of the Institute of the Czech Language of the CAS (from 2012–2017 also acted as its chair). Since 2017, Markéta Pravdová has been a member of the Academy Council of the CAS, where she is entrusted with conceptual issues of the academic media, presentation of results of the CAS, cooperation with media, communication with the public, editorial and publishing activities of the CAS, and the agenda of support of scientific societies. Prior to her engagement in the Academy Council, she was already active in the Council for Science Popularisation of the CAS and the Editorial Board of Academic Periodicals.

She dedicates herself to educational activities focused on the general and professional public. She has lectured and supervised students at the Faculty of Arts of CU and the Faculty of Social Sciences of CU. She is the editor-in-chief of the journal Naše řeč (Our Speech), author of the book McDonald’s – A Little Bit Different Culture?, leading author and editor-in-chief of several collective monographs, e.g. Academic Vade Mecum of the Czech Language, Do We Feel at Home in Czech?, Czech Again from A to Z, On Czech I–III. She is the co-author of the Internet Language Reference Book (accessible at prirucka.ujc.cas.cz) and more than a hundred professional studies and popularisation texts. She participated in the creation of TV programme O češtině (On Czech; Czech Television, 2006–2011), the radio programme Slovo nad zlato (Word above Gold; Czech Radio, 2015–2016) and other successful media projects. She is the laureate of a number of awards, such as the Otto Wichterle Prize, the Honorary Medal of Vojtěch Náprstek for Merit in the Popularisation of Science, or the Medal of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the First Degree (with a collective of authors of the Internet Language Reference Book).
