announces a call for applications for a

Junior Research Group Leader

Biomedical research on aetiopathogenesis of major lifestyle diseases

We are looking for an outstanding candidate to undertake original research and establish a new laboratory. The proposed research should focus on the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying (i) obesity-related co-morbidities, namely diabetes and cardiovascular disease; (ii) neurodegenerative diseases and related pathologies; and/or (iii) other topics of metabolic, cardiovascular, and neuroscience research compatible with the scientific goals of the institute (see https://www.fgu.cas.cz/en/about ). Applicants active in molecular, cell and developmental biology, physiology, biochemistry or clinically oriented research are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility: Up to 12 years after Ph.D. graduation (excluding maternity leave), as of 31 January 2024.

Selection criteria: Applicants will be selected on the basis of academic merit, i.e., the quality of their research proposal, publication record, and postdoctoral training. A vital asset will be intellectual independence as documented, for example, by independent publications (corresponding author) or previous (grant) awards. Securing additional funding is not a condition for applying for this start-up but will be an important condition for extending the start-up’s funding beyond the initial three years.

Two-stage application procedure (all documents in English): Stage 1: Submission of the following documents to fgu@fgu.cas.cz by 1 April 2024: (i) a letter of intent (research proposal) outlining the project (two A4 pages; single-spaced, font 11); (ii) professional CV; (iii) PhD diploma/certificate; (iv) two letters of recommendation. The results of Stage 1 will be announced by 1 May 2024. Stage 2: Short-listed candidates will be invited to submit full proposals (max. six A4 pages) within 30 days and give a public lecture during their interview at the Institute of Physiology. The successful candidate should take up his/her position as soon as possible but not later than 30 June 2025. A three- to five-year grant, including salary, lab space, and operating costs, allowing the prospective Junior Research Group Leader to set up and run his/her lab, start building a team, and eventually apply for a permanent position.

The minimum annual financial support to cover salary costs is 1,500,000 CZK (approx. 60,000 EUR) for the Junior Research Group Leader and team members.

The minimum annual financial support for material costs is 400,000 CZK (approx. 16,000 EUR). 

Total financial support will be negotiable depending on the overall quality of the applicant and the project proposal.
