the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic announces a 2-year postdoctoral
position, starting on 1/1/2024, in the Relativistic Astrophysics
group (https://astro.cas.cz/) in the project "Accreting black holes in the new
era of X-ray polarimetry missions" (https://astro.cas.cz/expro).
The postdoc will model the X-ray emission of the accretion discs in Galactic
black holes in X-ray binary sources with the emphasis on the polarimetric
properties. This includes both the thermal disc emission as well as disc
re-processing of the illumination by X-ray corona. The main application of the
modelling will be the interpretation of recent IXPE polarimetric observations.
To this aim he/she will use currently available public radiative transfer and
polarimetric codes (TITAN, CLOUDY, STOKES) and also use/modify relativistic
polarimetric numerical codes developed in our group. Thus experience with C, C++
and Python computer languages is needed. Some experience with astronomical data
analysis in X-ray domain (using Xspec or similar software) and knowledge of
relativistic astrophysics (especially in the field of accretion theory,
radiative processes, ray-tracing in curved space-time) will be appreciated.
High motivation and ability to work independently as well as in the team
collaboration are expected.
The position is opened for 1 year, after which it can be prolonged for another
year based on applicant's successful performance. The salary will be based on
the domestic level and it includes full health insurance.

The successful candidate must hold a PhD degree in the field and present a
certificate of that by the date of employment. Preferences will be given to
early-stage researchers. A necessary condition for the appointment is to satisfy
the legal requirements for being employed in the Czech Republic.
