Institute of Rock Structure and Mechanics of the CAS announces an open competition in accordance with the Act No. 283/1992 Coll. on the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the Statutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences for a position Researcher/Postdoctoral Researcher/Scientific Assistant in the Department of Applied Rock Mechanics.

The IRSM CAS is a scientific institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, focusing on the research of the structure and properties of rocks. The Department of Applied Rock Mechanics became part of the IRSM as of 1 January 2024. The department deals with the study of physical and mechanical properties of rocks and their response to mechanical and thermal stresses in different temporal regimes. Scope of work:

  • Carrying out research focused on the thermally induced weathering of rocks
  • Applying field measurement techniques and methods to characterize physical and mechanical properties of rocks and their weathering rates (on-site and remote – UAV, thermal camera)
  • Morpho-structural mapping and characterization of rock outcrops
  • Carrying out basic geotechnical tests (UCS, Tensile Strength, Fracture toughness)

What we expect:

  • Ph.D. in science or engineering
  • Experience in fieldwork and mapping of rock outcrops
  • Knowledge of engineering geology and geotechnical methods
  • Experience in rock sample collection and preparation
  • Knowledge of the English language at least at B1 level
  • Basic knowledge of programming (MatLab, etc.)
  • Knowledge of GIS software (ArcGIS Pro, etc.)
  • Willingness to learn new things
  • Active publishing in international peer-reviewed journals
