Selection Procedures
Institute of Physics of the CAS announces an open competition in accordance with the Act No. 283/1992 Coll. on the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the Statutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences for a position Postdoctoral Researcher in the field of the physics of diamond nanomaterials and interfaces.
We are currently seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher who will carry out experimental research into the electronic, transport and optoelectronic properties of diamond nanomaterials and their interfaces, with a particular focus on hydrogen-terminated nanodiamonds.
The successful candidate (m/f) will join the Nanodiamonds and Interfaces Group at FZU and contribute to the development of a new research direction focused on the physics of diamond nanomaterials and interfaces.
What you will do
- Investigate and gradually build up independent research expertise linking electrical transport methods with spectroscopic characterisation
- Contribute to the development of a new research direction in the field of the physics of diamond nanomaterials and interface
- Plan, conduct and evaluate experiments focused on the electronic and optoelectronic properties of nanodiamonds
- Study electrical transport and surface conductivity, including the use of impedance spectroscopy and other AC/DC transport methods, and their correlation with the optical and spectroscopic properties of the material, with FTIR spectroscopy and electronically induced infrared phenomena in the diamond phonon region
- Investigate the influence of particle type, size, crystallinity, defects, nitrogen and surface termination on the electronic properties of nanodiamonds
- Collaborate on studying the relationship between these phenomena and the charge state and dynamics of NV centres
- Design and develop new experimental methodologies, process and interpret results, prepare scientific publications and present outcomes
- Be actively involved in formulating new research questions and actively contribute to formulating new research questions and to the further scientific development of the research direction.
- Supervise student projects (master’s or doctoral level)
- Foster collaboration and communication with other international partners, group members and FZU staff
- Write research papers and present results at conferences
What we expect
- Ph.D. degree in physics, solid-state physics, materials science, nanotechnology, electrical engineering or a related field, or expected completion of the Ph.D. before the start of employment.
- A specialisation in surface and interface physics, semiconductors, electronic transport or condensed matter physics is desirable
- Experience with electrical transport measurements, impedance spectroscopy, semiconductor characterisation methods or spectroscopy is an advantage
- Experience with diamond, nanodiamonds, surface charge transfer, FTIR spectroscopy, the Kelvin probe or similar methods is welcome, but not essential
- More important is a solid grounding in physics and the ability to master the necessary methods
- Ability to process experimental data, carry out quantitative analysis and work with scientific literature
- Ability to communicate effectively in a specialist context and to prepare scientific texts in English
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse team of researchers and students
- Capacity to independently conduct research, develop innovative ideas, and drive projects
- Analytical and physics-based thinking
- Ability to carry out systematic experimental work
- Willingness to learn new experimental methods and gradually develop one’s own specialist expertise is essential
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Excellent organization and time management skills
