Selection Procedures
Institute of Physics of the CAS announces an open competition in accordance with the Act No. 283/1992 Coll. on the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the Statutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences for a position PhD Student in Magneto-structural correlations in low-dimensional magnets.
We are currently seeking a highly motivated PhD Student with a deep interest in magnetism, superconductivity, or related phenomena and dealing either with solid-state or molecular systems. The successful candidate will join a progressive research team of the Department of Magnetics and Superconductors at the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences (fzu.cz).
What you will do
- Work on the PhD topic "Magneto-structural correlations in low-dimensional magnets"
- Be involved in DC and AC magnetometry and analysis of magnetic data
- Be involved in Mössbauer spectroscopy for iron-containing compounds, possibly also in solid-state NMR in other suitable cases
- Support interpretation of experimental data by suitable computation methods, such as DFT, Monte-Carlo simulations, or other numerical methods
- Write manuscripts of scientific articles, give regular presentations at seminars, and prepare posters
- Participate in group meetings
- Work with world-leading experts in the Department of Magnetics and Superconductors in the heart of Europe and collaborate with our global partners
What we expect
- MSc. degree in physics or related fields
- Admission to a university's PhD program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague (starting in October 2026)
- Background in condensed matter physics and magnetic properties of bulk solids, nanomaterials, or molecular compounds
- Basic experience with DFT calculations
- Basic experience with analysis of magnetic data and hyperfine methods
- Fluent in English (written and spoken) - capability to write scientific reports in academic English
- Reliability, adaptability, and hands-on experience with experimental work
- Natural curiosity, creative thinking, and proactive problem-solving
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse team of researchers and students
- Openness to engaging with international research
- Eager to learn and share knowledge
- Excellent communication skills
