The Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission is an internal research centre of the European Union. It has been established in 1957 and is equipped with top laboratories. On Friday, September 20, the Czech Academy of Sciences signed a Memorandum of Understanding with JRC in Ispra, Italy.
“I very much welcome the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. I consider this an important milestone on the way to deepen our mutual cooperation,” said the CAS President Eva Zažímalová shortly after the signing ceremony, adding that the Memorandum will facilitate both access to European laboratories and to valuable European contacts. The document is a basis upon which specific agreements between particular CAS institutes and JRC laboratories will be built.

Dan Chirondojan, a representative of the centre charged with matters pertaining to space, security, and migration, appreciated the Memorandum, as well: “The JRC makes continuous effort to keep pace with the most recent scientific trends and knowledge. Therefore, it collaborates with top research institutions in Europe, the CAS being without doubt one of them.”
The JRC research centre, organisationally one of directorates-general of the European Commission, used to focus on nuclear research for civilian purposes, but nowadays, its scope is much broader. The Memorandum with the Czech Academy of Sciences mentions also several promising areas of cooperation, for example artificial intelligence and impact of digital technologies, climatic change, nuclear security, sustainable agriculture, or new forms of communication. In Italy, the President of the CAS was also accompanied by the Academy Council members Ladislav Kavan and Antonín Fejfar, and by representatives of the CAS institutes.
