New joint bottom-up cross-European initiative Weave – Research funding without borders
19. 01. 2021
The Czech Science Foundation (GA CR) has launched a new joint bottom-up cross-European initiative Weave – Research funding without borders. Within Weave, researchers from two up to three European countries or regions are allowed to submit a collaborative research proposal to any of the participating funders. Weave is not a new, separate funding programme, but it makes use of existing funding channels for fundamental research (with the corresponding timelines and conditions) within the portfolio of one of the partners who have officially signed the Weave initiative.
Weave aims to simplify the submission and selection procedure of collaborative project proposals:
- a European team of researchersdetermine a coordinating applicant, who submits the joint proposal to the respective Weave funding organisation in their own country or region (the Lead Agency).
- The Lead Agency is responsible for the entire administrative procedure and scientific evaluation. The funding recommendation is then communicated to the other funders (the Partner Agencies), for approval and budgetary purposes.
- Each research funder involved is as such responsible for the payment of its own researchers (i.e. researchers who are eligible for the funding of this research funder).
GA CR cooperating institutions:
- Austrian Science Fung (FWF)
- German Research Foundation (DFG)
- Polish National Science Centre (NCN)
- Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS)
- Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)
Future cooperation planned with:
- Research Foundation Flanders (FWO)
- Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS)
- Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ)
- Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR)
- Research Council of Norway (RCN)
- Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development (FORMAS)
Since Weave will enable bilateral as well as trilateral scientific cooperation within Europe, it will contribute as such to the realisation of the European Research Area (ERA).
