Competition of the Belgian Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences

The Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences of Belgium has launched a worldwide competition for studies focused on developing countries. Everyone can participate in the competition, regardless of age (but at least finishing PhD studies) or country. Each work awarded by the Belgian Academy in this competition is entitled to a cash prize of EUR 2,500.

Scientific and original dissertations (or papers at least equivalent) up to five years old in English, French, German, Spanish or Dutch may be submitted to the competition. The studies must be delivered to the Secretariat of the Belgian Academy by the dates below in the following format: five paper documents and one electronic version. Applicants must also attach an abstract of no more than 1 200 words and their CV.

The following topics are announced for 2022:

1) a study on the socio-cultural impact of the Chinese presence in Africa or the Caribbean during the first two decades of the 21st century;

2) drought monitoring studies in semi-arid areas;

3) feasibility studies on renewable energy sources for possible large-scale use in developing countries.

Interested applicants may submit their studies related to the above topics to the Secretariat of the Royal Academy of Belgium no later than 1 March 2022.

In 2023, those interested will be able to choose from the following topics:

1) a study on the development of autochthonous religious traditions in the contemporary global world;

2) a study on the impact of climate changes and/or anthropogenic activities on ecosystem services (see UN Millennium Ecosystem Assessment) in the tropics (the study should deal with provisioning, regulating, supporting and/or cultural services);

3) a study linking biodiversity changes to the worldwide food supply and health evolution of populations in the South (rural and/or urban environments).

Interested applicants may submit their studies related to the above topics to the Secretariat of the Royal Academy of Belgium no later than 1 March 2023.

The primary mission of the CAS is to conduct research in a broad spectrum of natural, technical and social sciences as well as humanities. This research aims to advance progress of scientific knowledge at the international level, considering, however, the specific needs of the Czech society and the national culture.

Prof. Eva Zažímalová has started her second term of office in May 2021. She is a respected scientist, and a Professor of Plant Anatomy and Physiology.

She is also a part of GCSA of the EU.
