The rise of the Muslim Brotherhood candidates to power, the presidency in 2012 and Egypt’s key cultural institutions in 2013, was theatrically represented as the return of Sayyid Qutb, a former member of the Brotherhood who was accused of conspiracy and executed in 1966. Building on Qutb’s daunting public image forged in the 1960s, the argument was a powerful trope in the anti-Muslim Brotherhood campaign in 2013. The lecture will focus on historical uses of the reference to Sayyid Qutb in the 2013 repression against the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, which accompanied the military takeover of power.
