Invitation to the online conference to the 30th anniversary of CEFRES - May 27 - 28

20. 05. 2021

French Research Center in Humanities and Social Sciences (CEFRES) is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year. In order to highlight this important anniversary, an international conference entitled "Knowledge, Power and Academic Freedom in Europe (and Beyond)" will be held in cooperation with the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Charles University and CEFRES.

The conference will not only commemorate the establishment of CEFRES in 1991, when it accompanied the remarkable restoration of the French-Czech cooperation and scientific research in Central Europe in the humanities and social sciences, but also to discuss the great transformation of the academic world from the point of view of the recompositions of the relationship between academic knowledge and power, as well as to academic freedom. The conference is organized by all the mentioned institutions, as it should also emphasize the successful cooperation within the CEFRES Platform, which was established in 2014 and its goal is to support an interesting and promising project of the French-Czech team in obtaining a European ERC grant.

The conference celebrating this three-decade-long collaboration will be held in Prague in a hybrid form (face-to-face/remote) on 27 and 28 May 2021. The program of the first day will be in English and will begin on Thursday 27 May at 5 pm with a welcome speech by the Secretary of State for European Affairs of the French Government, Clément Beaune, the President of the Czech Academy of Sciences, prof. Eva Zažímalová, Director of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences of the French National Center for Scientific Research CNRS, François-Joseph Ruggiu, Rector of Charles University, prof. Tomáš Zima, and the director of CEFRES, Dr. Jérôme Heurtaux. Followed by a debate moderated by Director Heurtaux with a guest of honor, Dr. Michael Ignatieff, Rector and President of the Central European University. You will be able to participate in the debate through the ZOOM webinar, or watch online on the CEFRES Facebook.

On Friday, May 28, the conference will bring together 26 representatives of academic and diplomatic world, former directors and researchers of CEFRES, who will discuss the past, present and future of the Czech-French relationship in the European context, the challenges of knowledge transmission and internationalization. The program will be in French and English with simultaneous translation into English and will be divided into four thematic debates, with the first plenary lecture given by Pierre-Michel Menger, a professor at the Collège de France. You can find a detailed overview of the participants in the program and participate in again via the ZOOM webinar, or watch online on the CEFRES Facebook.
