Doc. Jiráň studied classical archaeology at Faculty of Arts of the Charles University in Prague. Since 1983 he is an employee of the Archaeological Institute of the Czech Republic in Prague, in the years 1999–2017 was its director. His specialty is the European Bronze Age and archaeometallurgy.

Completed several stays in Germany, Austria, Poland, Bulgaria, Great Britain and Italy, regularly participates in specialized international conferences. He has published more than 80 scientific papers (articles, studies, and monographs) at home and abroad and has led or participated in the implementation of the eight domestic and one international project. He works in the editorial boards of two principal Czech branch journals.

He is a member of the board of doctoral studies on a total of 5 domestic and foreign universities and he was leading a series of master and PhD theses. He is also member of the board for research of the government culture-minister, member of Commission for supporting the programs of science at Charles University etc.

He is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute, member of the Experts Panel for Projects of European Science Foundation, and member of the European Association of Archaeologists, where he also worked as a board member of the Committee for European Heritage Prize.
